How to Winterize Your HVAC System for Maximum Efficiency

As winter approaches and temperatures drop, it's crucial to prepare your HVAC System for the colder months. Taking a few simple steps can improve system efficiency, reduce energy bills, and extend the life of your HVAC. Here’s a quick guide to ensure your system is ready to keep your home warm and comfortable all winter.

1. Clear Away Outdoor Debris

Remove any leaves, dirt, or twigs surrounding the outdoor unit, and ensure any surrounding structures allow for unrestricted airflow. If your outdoor unit includes a heat pump, consider using an Everstand—a universal heat pump stand—to elevate it. This helps prevent snow and ice buildup, protecting the unit from corrosion and winter weather damage.

2. Adjust Thermostat Settings

Switch from cooling to heating mode if your Unico System serves both functions. The Unico System supports three heating methods:

  • Hydronic or Hydro-Air Heating: Uses a hot water coil with the air handler.

  • Electric Heating: An electric element in the air handler for efficient warmth.

  • Heat Pump: Provides both heating and cooling through one unit.

For optimal energy savings, adjust your programmable thermostat settings to maintain lower temperatures while you’re asleep or away.

3. Inspect and Replace Air Filters

Dirty air filters make your system work harder, increasing energy use and potentially damaging components. Check filters regularly and replace them every 1–3 months as needed. Clean filters help ensure your HVAC runs smoothly and keeps indoor air quality high.

4. Check for Air Leaks and Seal Ductwork

Air leaks in your ductwork can reduce your system’s efficiency. The Unico System has two duct types: the main duct (plenum) and flexible supply tubing. Inspect your ducts for leaks or damage, and if necessary, seal them with duct tape or consult a professional to ensure an airtight system.

5. Clean and Inspect Vents and Registers

Blocked vents and registers strain your HVAC system. Walk through your home and make sure all vents are open and free of obstructions. Regularly cleaning dust and debris around vents can improve airflow and indoor air quality.

6. Winterize the Outdoor Unit

Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear to maintain airflow and prevent damage. If the unit rests on a concrete pad, inspect it for cracks or unevenness. For units with a heat pump, investing in a stand like the Everstand can provide extra protection from snow, ice, and standing water, safeguarding your system’s performance through winter.

7. Schedule Professional Maintenance

While DIY preparation helps, a professional HVAC check-up is essential. An expert technician can inspect your system, clean components, and identify issues early on, which helps prevent unexpected breakdowns. Routine maintenance keeps your system running at peak efficiency and enhances its lifespan.

8. Consider a System Upgrade

If your Unico System is older, it may be time to consider a more energy-efficient model. Newer systems provide consistent indoor comfort while helping lower energy costs. An upgrade can enhance efficiency and potentially lower your carbon footprint.
